Statement from Mike Kennealy on Governor Maura Healey’s $6.4 Billion Overspending Crisis

Waltham, MA – Following reports that Maura Healey’s administration has spent $64.1 billion in 2025, $6.4 billion more than was allocated in the $57.7 billion Fiscal Year 2025 budget, Republican candidate for Governor Mike Kennealy issued the following statement:

“There is absolutely no excuse for this level of fiscal mismanagement. Our state budget is already bloated, and now we’ve blown past it by more than $6 billion? Give me a break. We are losing citizens and businesses every single day — and what we can’t measure is how many families and employers are taking one look at Massachusetts and deciding not to come here at all.”

“Yesterday, legislators from New Hampshire came to Massachusetts to personally thank Maura Healey for the very policies that are driving our citizens and businesses north. When people and businesses leave for greener pastures, so do their tax dollars. Shrinking revenue combined with reckless overspending means the people who remain are left holding the bag.”

In response to the $64.1 billion spent in 2025 being $3 billion higher than the state approved for itself to spend in Fiscal Year 2026, Kennealy added:

“This is an offensive and unacceptable use of taxpayer money, raising serious questions about how much the state will actually spend in FY26. We have no choice but to reverse course. In any business, if your expenses outpaces your revenue, there is only one option: you make cuts. For whatever reason, Governor Healey refuses to understand that basic reality.”

“When I served as Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, we presided over a booming, innovative economy. Today, Governor Healey presides over a financial freefall. I’m ready to restore Massachusetts to the economic powerhouse it should be.”
