Kennealy Vows to Protect Proposition 2½ as Liberals Signal Opposition

Lexington, MA – Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Kennealy is sounding the alarm as liberal leaders escalate their opposition to Proposition 2½, the law that caps annual property tax increases at 2.5 percent.

Just yesterday, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu voiced her disdain for the policy—mirroring a 2024 resolution by the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) calling for the 2.5% threshold to be increased. Kennealy warned that this alignment poses a direct threat to homeowners and renters across the Commonwealth.

“When liberals like Michelle Wu march in lockstep with the MTA, it signals they’re preparing an assault on taxpayers,” Kennealy said. “Proposition 2½ protects working-class families, homeowners, and renters from runaway housing costs. Repealing it would unleash property tax hikes, drive up rents, and crush affordability. This is nothing more than a government money grab, and leaders must speak out to defend Prop 2½ at all costs.”

Kennealy underscored the broader consequences of liberal fiscal policies that have already made Massachusetts one of the least affordable states in the nation.

“Massachusetts is becoming less and less affordable, and the American Dream is slipping away because of government overreach,” Kennealy said. “This is absolutely unacceptable. The conversation about repealing Proposition 2½ should not even begin. As your next Governor, I will defend this vital taxpayer protection and advance policies that lower taxes—not raise it.”
